new-pattern-fronts12Time for a makeover! We all know how different a dress can look when you make it up in different fabrics but I think that this is perhaps the most startling difference I’ve made to the look and feel of a dress . My Colourblock Dress was originally designed with bright colours and 1960s styling in mind. If you missed it the first time round, here it is in all it’s glory in coral, nude and black.

And there’s no doubt that it will look great in all different colour ways as I have talked about in the original post. But what would happen if you put it all in similar tones? Well – I tried it in very muted tones of raw silk first of all – it didn’t really work. The shades were just too delicate for the striking block shapes.

I’ve used a traditional denim, a pindot herringbone and a fabulous two tone navy wool remnant with a single red pinstripe running through it. They were all from Fabworks Mill shop. I added the finishing touch by picked up the bright red of the pindot with matching red topstitching. This is really effective and very easy to achieve detail. Have a look at my post on the blog about twin needle topstiching for details.

It can be hard to see past the first image you see of a pattern but don’t just stick to the obvious. Time to get creative! If anyone want to send me in a picture of their make of the Coloublock Dress I will post it onto my Facebook page – happy sewing!
